Buffalo Colostrum vs Cow Colostrum

By Trillium Nutritional · · 5 min read

Most colostrum on the shelf comes from dairy cows. Water buffalo colostrum is less common, and the differences start with the animal itself.

Two very different animals

Modern dairy cows have been bred for decades to produce as much milk as possible. Water buffalo were never put through that kind of selection, and they are still kept mostly in small family herds.

Buffalo milk is known for being richer: higher in fat and total solids. It is the same reason buffalo mozzarella tastes the way it does.

Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein that supports normal immune function. Water buffalo colostrum naturally contains more lactoferrin than cow colostrum, which is one of the main reasons people seek it out.

A2 protein

Water buffalo produce A2 beta-casein naturally. Many cow breeds produce A1, which some people find harder to digest. Choosing buffalo means there is no A1 to worry about.

Which should you choose?

Both are colostrum. If you want a naturally A2 option with more lactoferrin from small herds, buffalo colostrum is worth a look. As with any supplement, talk with your healthcare provider if you have questions about your own needs.
