What Is Lactoferrin?
By Trillium Nutritional · · 4 min read
Lactoferrin is one of the most talked-about proteins in colostrum. Here is what it is, in plain terms.
An iron-binding protein
Lactoferrin is a protein found naturally in milk, tears, saliva, and especially colostrum. Its name comes from its ability to bind iron.
By holding on to iron, lactoferrin helps support healthy iron balance and normal immune function.
Why colostrum is a rich source
Colostrum, the first milk after birth, carries much higher levels of lactoferrin than regular milk. It is part of what a newborn receives in its first days.
Buffalo vs cow lactoferrin levels
Water buffalo colostrum naturally contains more lactoferrin than cow colostrum. Trillium is first and second milking colostrum only, freeze-dried gently so the protein stays intact.
